Celebrating Earth Day: Silence and Everyday Action

The Blayney Eco Hub and on Zoom

1 Glasson St. Blayney, NSW

Zoom Link: https://bit.ly/4sipWYR (available from 9:45am)

This year, Earth Day 2026 is focusing on the practical. From “community cleanups, teach-ins, peaceful demonstrations, tree planting, voter registration, town hall meetings, community organizing” and everything in between, this Earth Day is all about action. Because of this focus, Earth Day organising begins this year on Saturday April 18 and runs across the weekend and into the week ahead. The World Community for Christian Meditation is also committed to action: action that rises from an encounter with the fullness of Love. This Love divine transforms us for action that is considered, attentive, and non-violent. Our World Community for Christian Meditation Australia (NSW) day together will explore how meditation and action can combine. An action has been chosen for this seminar: tree planting. You may have a tree planting plan for the day ready to go, or one can be developed on the day. Whether it be in the back yard or as part of a larger event, tree planting is how we will respond to this Earth Day invitation. The day will begin with some teaching and meditation. We will then move into the practicalities of tree planting itself. Those of us on site at the Blayney Eco Hub will plant there. Those attending online are invited to have a young tree/s ready to go or be ready to plan something for the week ahead. After lunch we will come together and reflect.

“At the Still Point”: Mystical Musings in Fraught Times

Rev Dr Mark S. Burrow will share his thoughts on “At the Still Point”: Mystical Musings in Fraught Times

Einstein was asked near the end of his life if he had any regrets. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Yes, I wish I had read the mystics much earlier in my life.” What does mystical vision bring in such times as ours? To help us explore this question, we’ll consider what Hadewijch, the early 13th c. Flemish Beguine, wrote of as “this wide wild simplicity,” which Meister Eckhart later described as the “whispering stillness” in the depth of things” and Julian of Norwich, after him, described as the “point” that gathers all in oneness. Such voices remind us, precisely in fraught times like ours, that the “unknowing” of wonder is the beginning of wisdom. They suggest what it means to find the courage of companionship—at the places of our fear and disillusionment. They encourage us to experience, with T. S. Eliot, that “at the still point, there the dance is.”

Mark is a scholar of medieval history, an award-winning translator and poet and has led retreats around the world including Bonnevaux.

Christ Church St Laurence 814 George Street, Sydney
